If you don't find the answer to your question here, please contact us. What is a LETS scheme?L.E.T.S. (Local Exchange Trading Systems) enable people to exchange skills by means of a sophisticated barter system. You get things done for yourself by doing things for others. At the same time it's very sociable. How does it work?Members list their 'offers' and 'wants' in a directory which includes everyone's phone numbers. The directory is updated regularly and distributed to all members who can then exchange services. How can they do that?Everyone gets vouchers for making payments in a local currency, used only by members. In our system the unit of currency is called the 'let' and one hour's work is worth approximately 6 lets. By using vouchers you don't have to have a direct bartering exchange. Is there any ordinary money involved? There's a small annual subscription (currently £10) to cover running costs. If an exchange involves some sterling costs (for example purchase of materials) you can charge for them in sterling (at cost!). Is it legal?Yes! Some 500 towns in Britain now have LETS. They trade in 'acorns' in Totnes and 'bobbins' in Manchester, and so on. LETS are spreading across the world and people are adapting the idea to local situations. And LETS currency is inflation-free! What skills can I offer?Anything you like doing. Or anything you're good at. I don't have much time - how can I take part? You can use Only Connect as often or as little as you wish. You are under no obligation at any time. But you might find that using Only Connect to get things done creates more spare time for you! Isn't it complicated? No, not at all. It's very simple, straightforward and enjoyable. How do I use the 'lets'?If you do something for another member they give you vouchers for an agreed amount, usually on the basis of 6 lets per hour. Your name is written on the back of the voucher to authorise you as the current owner. Are transactions taxable?LETS 'trading' is of an 'occasional social favour' type and not taxable. Only if you were to trade in lets as part of your regular business would you be liable for tax. Suppose I run out of vouchers? It's time to earn some! In fairness to all members you are given 'start-up credit' only up to the equivalent of 30 hours work. But by earning more 'lets' you can trade as much as you like. Can the system be abused? Not really, because it's a social network and there are safeguards. For example every member has access to all records of trading. No member can lose credit for work done since vouchers are always received from accredited and known members. Can I buy and sell things too?Yes, you can advertise in our newsletter and at our meetings. Don't you have a forum or a bulletin board? Not yet, but this site is under development and more features will appear soon, allowing members to contact each other directly. Watch this space! We're planning to improve electronic communications within Only Connect and would welcome suggestions. If I join, how do I contact people? You can phone them or contact them at our meetings or at one of our many social gatherings. |
